Georgia O’Keeffe Week 2024
Workshops, Lectures and Tours During O’Keeffe Week 2024
July 15th-19th, 2024
Join us as we celebrate Georgia’s time as a young artist here at Wiawaka. We are a unique and honored location here on Lake George that can provide proof of her early days on Lake George.
Before Yaddo was founded in Saratoga Springs, Katrina and Spencer Trask built their first artists’ retreat at Amitola – an Adirondack lodge known as Wakonda where students from the Art Students League of New York held their first retreat. Georgia O’Keeffe (pictured at Wiawaka) was a registered guest-artist in 1908. In honor of her stay we have put together a week filled with programs all about Georgia. Register early this week is very popular.
Stop by the Front Desk if you are interested in seeing Wakonda where Georgia stayed with the NY City League of Art Students, the historical marker, signage and the sitting room dedicated to Georgia’s stay here at Wiawaka.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council.

Georgia O'Keeffe Portrayed by Claire Nolan
July 18th, 2024
7:00pm-8:30pm
Just the lecture is $20, get dinner and the lecture for just $35.
Claire Nolan is an educator and a storyteller. She has combined those two passions in her portrayals of important historical figures from US and world history. What are First Person Portrayals of Historic Characters? What can you expect during a performance? During a “first person” performance, the actor takes on the role of the historical figure. She dresses in period costume and may portray herself as a person who has no idea how things have changed since her historical period.
During her presentation Claire also hopes to provide a springboard for discussion of the historical character and her time and place. Claire’s repertoire includes Mary Harris (Mother) Jones, Rachel Carson, Georgia O’Keeffe and Marie Curie. She welcomes suggestions for other important women from history to add to her repertoire. Claire’s portrayals are especially appropriate for Middle School, High School and Adult audiences.
Lake George through the senses and Georgia O’Keeffe’s art
July 19th, 2024
10:00am-12:00pm
Instructor: Johannah Spero
Class is $30
In this fun, interactive workshop, we will focus on imagery as a literary device, taking inspiration from majestic Lake George—in person and as seen in Georgia O’Keeffe’s artwork. From journaling to guided meditation to exploration of the outdoors, participants will transpose their interaction with nature into sensory descriptions—which will become lines of poetry. The workshop will culminate in an individual and group poem to memorialize Lake George, as O’Keeffe has done in the canon of American art.
With a BA in English literature from UMass Amherst and a Masters in Teaching from Simmons College, Johannah Davies Spero teaches composition and creative writing at SUNY Adirondack. The award-winning author of 8 novels under the name JD Spero, she has done author visits in school classrooms across the Northeast and has taught writing workshops locally for BOCES enrichment, and also at yoga retreats, Wiawaka, the Hyde Collection, Chingachgook Women’s Retreat and, most notably, following the footsteps of Stephen King at Exeter High in New Hampshire. After living in the Boston area for over twenty years, she returned to her hometown of Lake George to raise her three boys—although her family will always root for Boston sports teams.
