Painting Architectural Elements in Landscape with Watercolor

August 6th, 2024

9:00am-12:00pm

Instructor: Diane Swanson

Cost of the workshop is $55, this includes material fees.

$65 for the workshop and a day pass.

Painting architecture and landscape scenes in watercolor can seem intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Creating a dynamic composition with a preliminary sketch is key, along with striking a balance between controlling the medium while allowing the paint to do what it wants to do. Watercolor artist Diane Swanson will offer a few ways and techniques to help participants work towards that balance in a relaxed easy setting.
Participants will practice watercolor technique demonstrated by Diane, to learn some of the magic of the medium, then will apply these techniques in creating their own watercolor painting, inspired by Wiawaka's varied architectural elements harmoniously set in nature. Diane will work with each artist through the process, with tips on how to handle composition, color and brushwork.

Diane Swanson is a visual artist based in the Lake George/Adirondack region; much of her work celebrates the lakes, mountains, woods and landscapes of the Northeast. The inherent poetry of nature and the push and pull of positive and negative space inspire her painting practice. Although her paintings are representational, she approaches her work with an eye to more abstract qualities, harmonizing atmosphere and movement with form, color and line.

The Victorian Purse (Reticule): Discussion and Craft

August 14th, 2024

3:30pm-5:30pm

Instructors: Catherine & Pam Golden

Cost of the workshop is $40, this includes material fees.

Today women’s fashions typically have pockets. Long before the age when pockets were sewn into women’s clothing, women could slip their hands through open side seams in their garments to access cloth pockets tied around their waists. But when layered skirts and expansive petticoats gave way to tapered clothing and a more fitted silhouette in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, how did women in pocketless dresses carry their necessary objects for daily social life? They used reticules, handheld drawstring pouches that essentially functioned as exterior pockets. In the first part of this workshop, Catherine, a professor of English, will present the history of the reticule, often netted or made of cloth and decorated with embroidery and beading to match the wearer’s gown. Participants will also learn what women of the day commonly placed in their overstuffed reticules and compare these items to those which we jam into our handbags today.

In the second part of the workshop, Pam, an artist and art educator, will guide us in the creation of our own reticules. We will provide drawstring bags that participants can decorate with beads, lace, ribbons, and gems that can be glued or sewn onto the reticules. We will also provide one essential Victorian item to place in your reticules. At the end of the workshop, we will admire each other’s creations. Come ready to make a fashion statement.
